2002-10-19 7:50 PM Artsy Pottery Mood: Impressed |
The village of Tunis is known for its artsy types, especially one woman who came from Switzerland quite some time ago. She has opened a pottery in the village and teaches locals how to make nice things that they can sell to foreigners or Cairenes who visit during the weekend.
A couple of us decided to visit her compound and check out the wares, so we hiked up through town in hopes that her place would be open. Thankfully it was, and we got a little tour and bought some nice things. Her whole compound is built right on a large natural outcrop of limestone. The workshop areas, living areas, and gardens just kind of flow from one to another. She has a great place, full of little rooms and nooks and crannies and different levels, one even with a little bridge to cupula that has a nice view of the lake.
The whole place has natural stone flooring

On the way to the pottery, we passed this house; the decor indicates the owner took a plane flight to Mecca, one of the things a devout Muslim must do at least once
One kid of a group who would see us coming and shout "hallo, hallo" until at least 10 minutes after we walked by their house.
Many of the walled compounds along the road to the corner store and beyond contain beautiful gardens. We got a tour of one, by chance, because one of cooks was talking to the guard in one and he let us in to look around while the owner wasn't there. I didn't have my camera that day, so I cannot show you the inside, but this bougainvillea gives the first hint of what lies inside. Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
