A beautiful ride on a bumpy road

Last week in my sermon I talked about the freeway drive to Very Big River to see OEH's grandmother, Sturdy Grandmother.

After the service, a member came up to me and remarked, "I can't believe you like that road! That's the worst highway in Snow Belt State! Driving that road is hazardous! Why, it's so bumpy you can shake loose a filling right out of your head if you're not careful."

The thing is, he's right. It is such a bumpy road. But it runs through such a beautiful place, that it would be a shame to avoid it just because of a rough ride. There are vistas that can only be seen along that road, at that distance, from that vantage point.

Ministry is a rough ride for me right now. The road I'm on is bumpy now and then. But I still believe that there are vistas of incredible beauty that I have only begun to glimpse, and that the road that I am traveling is the one on which I'm meant to be.

Maybe for me the lesson in all of this is to relax a little, loosen my grip on the wheel, ride into the bumps instead of resisting them all the time, and learn to appreciate the rhythm.

Maybe then those wondrous views will pop into focus.
