Rodent Ramblings You Don't Want to Ask. Really. 52066 Curiosities served |
2003-04-17 5:06 PM A Whole Lot of Not Much Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Dazed Read/Post Comments (0) So, today has probably been one of the more boring days in my little existence. Which is odd since Thursdays are my busy days. However, classes were a no-go for one reason or another (and none of them the icky scratchy feeling that refuses to leave the back of my throat or low grade fever). Added to that no one but me showed up for the writers' group meeting. That was a bit creepy, but just as well since I'm not feeling well (see above).
Still, it was weird to have this busy day planned and nothing happen in it. Well, that's not entirely true. I did meet with my thesis director who is quite pleased with how my research is coming along, and wants me to rewrite the proposal again to represent that research. This is version four, five, I'm not even sure. Anyway, I have to get that to him by Tuesday. The plan is to get the proposal in and accepted by the time the semester ends (May 8th). I'd be feeling confidant about this if it weren't for the fact that I still haven't got readers. There just aren't that many science fiction readers in the department. Oh, well, I'll work it out. I also called Clarion and formally accepted their acceptance. I was going to wait until I heard from Clarion West, but upon thinking about it I decided East would be the better experience for me even if I did get into West (which was initially my first choice). There were a lot of factors that led to this decision, not the least of which is that East's tuition is $400 or so less near as I can tell. Since this little excursion is being funded by my ever-wonderful husband it was definitely something I felt should carry weight. There was also the theoretical net gain of two instructors. I suppose this is something I should explain. Clarion West has six instuctors: five authros and an editor. Clarion East has seven: six authors and an editor. Also, Nancy is teaching at Clarion West, and while I absolutely adore her and have found her insights on my writing invaluable, she is my mother-in-law and there is a bit of awkwardness there. It wasn't a problem at the Writers and Books workshop I took with her, but then that was somewhat lower stakes. Okay, I'll be honest. The real reason I think that having Nancy as an instructor would be less beneficial than having someone else is that I tend to cling to familiar faces, and I'm afraid I'd try to use her to hide. Since she's teaching the first week that could be problematic. Not that I think she'd let me get away with it. But still. On the other hand Nancy is a tremendous teacher and it's hard to know what I'm going to be missing. The people at Clarion West are going to be very lucky. Of course, from what I've seen of the line-up so are we attendants (and I can say we now, how cool is that?) at East. I just can't testify to that first hand yet. Anyway, those items are the only things of note that happened today. The rest was aimless web browsing and watching Brian play Dark Cloud 2. That's it for now. I'm going to grab dinner. Bye, all!
