Grease You're the One That I Want Does no one share my secret vice?

I have never watched Survivor or Lost or American Idol. And then, when I finally get hooked on a ridiculous reality show, I have no one with whom to share my passion.

"Grease: You're the One that I Want" is a talent elimination show. The winners get to star as Sandy and Danny on Broadway. Each week, the young hopefuls sing and dance for the panel. And we, America, get to vote for our favorites.

I may be the only American paying attention. I haven't seen a single mention in Entertainment Weekly. (Ok, I read it every week; I guess I have lots of secret vices.) And as I have confessed my obsession to friend after friend hoping to find a kindred spirit, the response ranges from "never heard of it" to "Ugh, I had to watch that at my in-laws last week; I think it was the worst t.v. I've ever seen."

I admit it's got a lot of problems:

not much content. If you took out all the repeated sequences and the standing around waiting for people to vote, I doubt each episode would last half an hour.

fake drama. We get these montages of the contestants saying mean things about each other and you know they were prompted to say them. And then, I just can't stand the long pauses before they announce who is going to be eliminated. I'm also really tired of hearing how much is at stake. Really, not much.

a hyper polish at odds with its "I'm just a nobody trying to break into Broadway" shtick. The dancing, singing, choreography, costumes—it's all professional. And the contestants aren't?

But here's why I can't wait to watch it every week:

I love the music. I love Grease songs. I love songs from that era.

I am fascinated by the analysis. I especially love it when I see something in a performance, like a performer faking fun, and then the panel says, "You seemed like you were faking it." Kathleen, the director, actually gives constructive criticism. I would love a more PBS version of it all where a director helps us see what makes a performance work. But, I'm getting snippets here.

Reality t.v. is a big fake, but not a completely big fake. These men and women are really up there singing and dancing. They are really trying to get a huge reward. They are for real.

Ah, you know, the guys are hot!

So, come on over to my watercooler and dish with me about it. And, vote for Max!
