Rose, David, and I went off to story time at the library tonight. Rose immediately sat down on the floor and was rapt for the entire time, as she has been at every story time we have gone to since she was David's age.

David grabbed a bear off the bear bench. He circled the room twice. He ran out of the room. I brought him back. He ran out of the room four more times. He climbed the step stool to the drinking fountain and splashed his hand in the bowl saying "Wawa!" kind of loudly. He did that four more times. He pulled the telephone off the hook and was shocked when he couldn't wander off with it in his hand—what a telephone with a cord?

We went outside. I raced between watching Rose through the library window and making sure David didn't break for the street. He decided the tree seeds were garbage and threw them in the garbage can. He dug in the dirt. He threw scraps of paper in the garbage can. I drew the line at cigarette buts. For the last half of the last story, he squirmed on my lap and ate a cracker. It's a start.
