the first day of kindergarten

It went ok, fine, no huge disasters.

Minor glitches—After the all school all parent flag ceremony, I walked back with Rose. She said rather desperately, “We’re going to have snack on the playground, and they don’t have my snack.”

I said, “Oh no, honey. I’m sure they got your snack where we left it by the water cups.”

I was thinking, “You are sweating the small stuff, kid. How about the fact that I’m leaving you with a bunch of strangers?”

Well, Rose was right. Even though I had had a long conversation with the teacher about Rose’s need to eat regularly, and we all agreed where the gluten-free snacks were going to be, the teacher forgot. I know. I know. It’s the first day. I don’t really care that Rose’s name disappeared off her locker, totally confusing her or that no one explained what to do with the lunch bags, but I feel a mite protective about the gluten-free status. We’ll see how it goes.

Nice moments—First, it was nice that Rose could give us the blow by blow for the day—the playground rules, how to put your garbage away after lunch, how you get to walk out of the lunchroom onto the playground all by yourself. I hate not knowing the routine. I like to imagine where she is in her day.

She told us several teachers complimented her lunch and said they’d like to eat something like that too. She looked very happy about it. I happen to be very fond of tofu spread and pickle sandwich myself. And since it’s basically all Rose eats. . .

Rose’s big complaint—She didn’t learn to read. We had told her she would learn to read in kindergarten. We had to backtrack and explain it might take a few days.
