1. Baby Animals—David slept until 6:15 probably because he didn’t go down until 9:00 and was up twice in the night, so this was definitely a late start for us. I was getting hungry. But we had to have our post-nursing, pre-breakfast books.

2. Peter Rabbit—the sound effect doesn’t work.

3. Daddy and Me—one word a page. I’m still trying to listen to the radio.

4. Thomas the Train—“Good job green train. Have fun blue train.” Gag me.

5. Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice—Part of Rose’s book pack from school. Could I please, please, please, just read this book to her before my nap.

6. Penguins of Antartica—Could I please please just read this book too before my nap.

7. How to Make a Raft—Rose and John have gone off to school. David and I are still on the couch in our jammies. This book has a picture of a girl who looks a lot like Miriam. David loves it.

8. Cook’s Illustrated—We’ve had a no book interlude that involved getting dressed, going to jazzercise, playing at toddler gym after jazzercise, and David playing with the Strawberry Shortcake paper doll house while I make lunch. Now he would like me to read the insipid Strawberry Shortcake book instead of eating my lunch. I refuse. So, David sits on my lap pointing out all the carrots I should eat in my soup. I spoon hot, spicy, gluten soup around his body and read about crispy skin chicken.

9. Goodnight Moon—It’s naptime. We rarely read books at this point, but I guess today’s the exception.

10. Baby Colors.

11. Hafiz—In the bathroom between putting David down for his nap and working for an hour finding grant giving organizations for my client. Hafiz is a 13th century Persian poet whose work is ecstatic. He makes me feel in love.

12. Thomas the Train—post nap, over and over, for half an hour straight.

13. The Temple Bulletin—I read this at the same time as Thomas because how much concentration does it take to say “Peep peep” and “The sun is hot. The sun is round”?

14. Strawberry Shortcake—Unfortunately, David spotted it on the table.

15. Arthur and His Family Go on Vacation—Rose went to the school library today. While she watches t.v., David and I delve into her new books.

16. Angelina’s Theater Show—I convince Rose to take a bath by promising to read her library books afterwards. I have both kids on my lap. By some miracle, David manages to pay attention, or at least not actively interrupt a Rose level book.

17. Arthur and His Family Go on Vacation—This time we read all the words.

18. Jamberry—Rose goes to brush her teeth and listen to Daddy read Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. David picks out his bedtime books.

19. Going on a Bear Hunt—very nice.

20. Katy and the Big Snow—a fabulous classic.

21. Boots—Boots the cat needs a bath but keeps running away. I hate this book. I find the illustrations ugly and the text excruciatingly boring. I grit my teeth and try not to punch each word with sarcasm.

22. Last Chance—a cheesy romance novel.
