The gym was noisy, crowded. Random bursts of applause would interrupt the speakers in our precinct. I had to strain to hear people making their cases. I had come straight from the memorial. I had both kids, David having refused to nap. It was chaotic, and I’m not sure I trust all my delegates, and still and still, it was a blast.

I just love democracy in action. I love being with people who care passionately about important political issues and are trying to make good decisions around them. I love seeing my neighbors; nearly every household from my side of the street was there. Alan and Joanne’s college-aged son is going to be a delegate. Marc was listening intently; his partner Joah wrangled the kids on the playground. Best of all, I got to vote. I got to put my choice on a piece of paper and have it counted.
