so you think you can dance

Alright, where are my reality t.v. watchers out there? Sharon? Jed Classic? I've got a new show that I just love—So You Think You Can Dance.

It's your standard reality t.v. competition show. John mocked it for having the ubiquitous snarky British judge, but really it's so much better than Step It Up and Dance, which in retrospect looks contrived, wacky, and about who burnt the eggs and left the pan in the sink and not about good dancing. (Can anyone tell I just finished rereading Daddy Long Legs, a scrumptious epistolary novel with such a strong voice I can hear nothing else at the moment?)

They have lots and lots of dancing. They film it reasonably well, and they critique it with specifics so I actually learn something. The critiques are long too. I've already learned about several dance styles I didn't know before—crumping and popping. And they aren't just showing crowd pleasing styles like hiphop. They have modern (though I'll admit every modern they've done seems to have a sexual theme), ballroom, broadway, and this week, Indian.

My favorite part so far was actually the guest performers this week. The Alvin Ailey dancers took my breath away.
