off the blocks

Yesterday, Rose and I went swimming while my mom hung out with David. We had a really nice time. After seeing her in swim class and how well she's been doing, I've gotten much more relaxed around her in the water. I actually took my eyes off her and we swam the width of the pool together.

She decided she wanted to go down to the deep end and do jumps and dives. We did that for a while. And then I said, "Do you want to jump off the blocks?" She's been refusing for two years now. But yesterday she said yes. No shaking legs once she was up there, no backing away. She just jumped. Again and again. She did cannon balls and pencil jumps. She tried to touch the bottom. She swam back to both sides.

And then she tried some dives. They weren't the best dives in the world. I was a little worried that the bellyfloppish nature of them might put her off diving, but she was not dissuaded. Later she said, "I'm so proud of myself." As well she should be.
