trip to the dentist

I don't know when this concept of professionals targeting their services especially to kids started, but I dig it. I mean there have always been pediatricians with little kid toys in their waiting rooms. But now, I go to a doctors' practice that only does kids, a haircutter that only does kids (they've got a huge backroom of toys and video to watch during the cut), and a dentist who only does kids.

They've got the toys in the waiting room, the grape smelling gloves and the bubblegum flavored fluoride, but they've also got a staff who understands kids and relates to them well. I love going there. My kids love going there. Can you imagine? When I told the kids they were going to the dentist, they started jumping in the air with excitement.

The actual visit went well too. Rose is a pro now. She eagerly got her x-rays, picked out her fabulous sunglasses (to block out the bright light), and let the hygentist do her thing. David and I sat and watched, David getting more and more nervous. This was his first time. His technician saw the look on David's face and decided he would just get his teeth counted today, no cleaning. So smart.

David hung in while the dentist checked out his teeth and then really enjoyed his goody bag and present from the treasure chest. Everyone's teeth look just fine. David has some chipping, but the teeth are still strong and it is not indicative of what will happen with his permanent teeth.

My only objection is the dentist and tech did more talking than listening. They presumed I was attempting to brush my children's teeth and the children's resistance was making it difficult. Then they lectured me about how to manage it.

Actually, my children adore brushing their teeth—Rose because she's a mite bit obsessive, David because the toothpaste is sweet. I'm the disorganized lazy one. Even though it looked like David wasn't paying attention, it's clear he was soaking in all the info because we immediately had to floss when we got home. In the last two days I think we've brushed 8 times and flossed 3.
