You know how all those holiday events got cancelled due to snow? Well, the Seattle Men's Chorus put on a make-up concert tonight for all of us, and my heavens there were a lot of us, who missed a concert in December.

My friend Becky goes every year, and this time I got to go with her. It was fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of choral music, but even if I probably didn't appreciate the intricacies of the harmonies, I had a blast. They did a wonderful job of mixing up the hilarious with the sublime. They set the poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to music, but in the intro they said since our generation needed a change of scene every 15 seconds, they were going to change the style of music that often. They went from glee club to scary monster to beach boys and on and on, with prancing reindeer and acting out to go along with it.

I loved the piece they did about a soldier trying to get home for Christmas in 1944, but my favorite was called New Words. It was a solo about teaching a son words like "moon" and "stars." Every time, the soloist gave the new word, the chorus joined in singing and signing the word. I cried all through the song. I thought about walking up the slush covered stairs today, cold, two heavy bags in my hands, and David pointing out the half-moon. I said, "Yes, dear, it's beautiful." But I barely looked up. The song made me think about slowing down and holding on to the beauty my son shows me.
