sleep through the night

Ever since we got that big boy bed, boom! He started sleeping through the night. Yes, he wakes up for the occasional bad dream, but when I remember how he was up every single night, this is just intensely fabulous.

wake up at a decent hour

This morning started at 6:15 and I'd been up sick all night, so it didn't feel like a particularly decent hour, but again since that big boy bed, he regularly gets up between 6:30 and 7:30. We have no idea why. Was he banging into the sides of the crib? We'll just be glad and grateful.

button and unbutton his own shirt

I remember Rose learning to button. It was agonizing. I would be in a hurry to get her dressed, out to daycare, myself off to work, and she would hold that slippery little button and not be able to get it through the hole. She'd struggle for days, of course refusing all help. David, I just turned around and he was buttoning. He's got these new Thomas pajamas, and he's buttoning them with a nary a problem. I'm so glad I missed the learning curve on this one.

color in the lines

Not that I'm a great advocate for coloring in the lines either literally or metaphorically, but it is a motor skill. He's gone from scribbling the entire page blue, to covering just one creature in color though with a lot of frayed edges, to being able to fill in very small letters, light blue of course.

recognize all the letters in his name

This just happened a couple days ago. He's had 'D' for a long time now, but he looked at his cubby hook and rattled off all the letters for me.

imaginative play

I love listening to David narrate his play. "Get out of my way!" says Thomas. "I want Momma kitty" says baby kitty.

be polite

He is in no way perfect with his "please," "thank you," and "I'm sorry," but they show up a lot. It is perfectly delightful to hear an unprompted "thank you." His "I'm sorry," especially after being yelled at for doing something he knows is wrong, is particularly contrite.
