I would say all that is true, and it is an amazing book. The first half are notes written as Hall's wife, the poet Jane Kenyon, was dying. The second half are letters to her after she died. I've read other poems of grieving but none have struck me as hard as these. Maybe because I heard him read some of them. Over ten years after her death, his grief is palpable.
