talking David off the ledge

I've gotten John and the kids out of the house relatively cheerfully, and I have 45 minutes to get some work done before mom and I are going to work out. I manage to read three poems and start to wonder if Stephen Dunn is the guy who wrote those wicked divorce poems (he is), when the phone rings. David has had a complete melt down. John is walking the older kids to school, and my sister is managing freak out boy who wants his mommy. I call. Julia puts me on speaker phone and I tell the one about George and Harold going to visit Puff the Magic Dragon in the land of Honalee, and then Santa Claus and Rudolf show up. David starts taking slower breaths and says he's pretending I'm there. Julia by now has gotten everyone in their seat and buckled in, a miracle. I pass the story off to her and try to focus on Dunn and Postcard for Tortola.
