waiting in waiting rooms

David is still sick. It will be three weeks tomorrow.

This is not particularly shocking. I figure kids get colds that last all winter. But Saturday his eyes got gunky. I started freaking out since there was a case of pink eye in his classroom. John told me not to freak out because we had no trouble seeing the whites of his eyes. (Nobody's shooting, mind you.) But then last night, I was up two hours dealing with sealed shut gunky eyed miserable kid. Which made for miserable, though so far none gunky, Mommy.

I called the consulting nurse, and she suggested bringing him for the only appointment available--3:00. I had to pick Rose up at school at 3:25. Remind me never make a doctor's appointment without a really big cushion. Thus ensued a lot of stressful waiting in the waiting room and the doctor's office before I ascertained that Sheila and Mike were covering for me. You know that if I leave right now, I'll only be two minutes late deal making you do with yourself as you sit in the closed windowless room reading Three Sillies? That was me. David seemed completely mellow about it all.

So, no pink eye. But he does have a sinus infection. That meant a trip to the pharmacy. Pharmacy one didn't have the medicine in stock. I called to cancel our afternoon playdate. (However did we live without cell phones? It's not just the phone; it's the handy dandy phone numbers.) At the second pharmacy, we sat in the waiting chairs and entertained everyone by reading five stories aloud. You'll notice I had seven stories with me. Before starting this adventure, David and I had gone to the library to fortify ourselves.

I tell you David was not destructive, not loud, not bouncing off the walls. I really appreciated it and told him so.
