Rose won the Breakfast of Champions. As my sister and I were discussing, it's not "won" as in merit, but "won" as in lottery. The Seattle Public Library system had a kids' summer reading program. For every 10 books they read, their name went into a hat to win a fancy downtown celebration. Rose won. So, we left David with my sister, took Miriam with us, and had a wonderful time.

The breakfast was at a downtown hotel on a top floor. Lots of people opening the door for you and good views. All 160 winning kids and their families were dressed up. We had boring French toast and great fruit salad. The boring speakers were not so bad because they gave book talks. The head of the city council told us about CatWings by LeGuin, and the Mayor showed us the very first book he ever read, One and One and One. Given those dignitaries, this was obviously the event to hit. Then all the kids were called up on stage and along with their name had their favorite book and a few other details announced. I think Rose picked The Princess of the Midnight Ball. They had a good performer, and the kids got swa--a library bag, a library t-shirt, a Mariner's lunch box and hat, and a giant cookie with their name on it. Our cookie, gluten-free of course, was the biggest hit.

Rose has been looking forward to this event for three weeks, and it did not disappoint.
