first day of Sunday School

David had his first day of Sunday School yesterday, and it went well. I shouldn't be surprised because he started bragging about starting Sunday School the other night, and he made no objections as we got ready. But, I just remember all the times I tried to get him to Tot Shabbat or to watch the Purim play and how we had to sit in the foyer while the service continued without us.

It went 90% great. He made the collage of Jewish images and even recognized a dreidal. He made a shoebox sukkot. The grandparents will be happy to know they are all in it. (That includes you Grammy and Grandpa Joe.) And his favorite part was the "walk quietly to the bathroom" game. Yeah, we can start playing that game every day.

But services did not go well. The entire Sunday School, all 650 of them, descended on the sanctuary, and the noise was too much for him. I was very pleased that teachers noticed him plugging his ears, and the school had enough helpers in the class that they could move him to the back where I joined him. He still plugged his ears back there. So, we are going to send him with earplugs next week. The group will be much smaller, and we'll see how it goes.

I love the teacher's letter home. First, his email has a riff on obi wan kenobi, so I know he and David are going to get on famously. He said the kids were going to learn about holidays and Jewish values, but really they were going to learn to be at home in the synagogue and enjoy being Jewish. If only they could turn the mikes down, I think David could get there.
