hike to Rosario head

As I was reading the description of this hike, I thought to myself, how is this different than Carkeek Park? Carkeek has trails up and down its hills. Carkeek has beach and lovely vistas. Carkeek is 10 minutes from my house.

Rosario Head is 1.5 hours from my house. Otherwise, there's not much difference. I felt like I drove 3 hours total (well, to be fair, my sister drove) for a picnic in a park. The view is stunning, no question. I feel privileged to live near such grandeur. But the hike was not satisfactory.

We planned to set off on this hike at 9:00. So, by 10:00 we were on the road. I truly plan to do better next time. Julia and kids, me and kids, and mom set off in the mini-van. My friend Becky had read The Diamond in the Window by Jane Langton onto CD for us. Becky is an amazing reader, an amazing chooser of books, and we were all mesmorized. It's a fantasy novel with a quest and a lot of Emerson and Alcott references. I highly recommend it. Even better, I think Becky should go into business, and I should buy you all copies of her reading it. That book got us through the easy drive to Deception Pass State Park.

The state is out of money. So, they are now charging to park at the state park. Prepare yourself.

We parked, got out all our gear, peed, played on the play equipment, checked the sun screen and headed out on our hike. Twenty minutes later we were done. Huh? It was a reasonable up and down along the head. It had gorgeous views of Fidelgo Bay. It smelled good. But, it ended in another park. And that was pretty much it.

We had our lunch at the picnic tables, played on the beach, and eventually "hiked" back. With the little jaunt we did around the top of the bluff, we maybe got an hour of hiking time total, none of it out of civilization.

So, my friends here's what I'm looking for in a hike:

1.5 hours or under drive from Seattle
Debby proof directions (this is probably impossible, but I thought I'd put it out there)
a sense that you are in the wilderness
2-3 miles distance, minimal elevation gain
a fun destination like a waterfall, river, beach

Where shall we go this Friday?
