the not fun part

airplane rides--Absolutely nothing went wrong--no delays, no fights over changed seats. The kids watched dvds the whole way. It was all quite calm compared to flights previous years. But, as all of you know, traveling is exhausting, stressful, dehydrating, and boring.

97 and humid--Everyone kept saying it was lovely last week. Not this week. You'd step outside and start to sweat. I had no desire to play croquet even at 8:00 at night.

the fun part

sleeping--There were no fights at bedtime. This is phenomenal for traveling. It was normal bedtime routine, albeit much later and the kids shared a room, so they would chat for awhile. No fighting over bedtime reduced our stress tremendously and made the kids more cheerful.

eating--We have not conquered our children's picky eating, but we've made some serious headway. David discovered he loved corn on the cob, August in Ohio corn on the cob, naturally. Both kids found a way to make do at Kendal's dining hall. Rose loves the bacon bits at the salad bar and had several hot dogs. David ate a hamburger. Just adding a few new foods opens up a lot of dining options.

behaving--Last time we were in Oberlin it was winter, and David was cooped up inside. His behavior reflected it. This time we got him enough physical activity that he was mostly capable of following directions. And I had enough energy that when he stuck his shoes on the table at the restaurant after being told twice not to, instead of yelling at him, I gave him math problems. His feet came down, his head came up, and we all had fun.

fun--John's parents are discovering more and more fun things for us to do at Kendal and environs. So, we went swimming, played croquet, played miniature golf, and played with the balls and bats they gave us in the big shared lawn. We went into Cleveland and went to the art museum, science museum, and the submarine. We went swimming at the lake and built a great waterway structure around our sand castle, and we went to a waterpark with Nancy and Myron. It was all lots and lots of fun.
