mommy hat/worker hat

It was a strange day. I actually got a lot done, but I kept switching from Mommy to Writing Consultant and back.

Getting the kids off to Sunday School only had one glitch. No, not the time change. At the last minute David decided he wanted to be a cool dude for Purim. He insisted that cool dudes didn't just have white iphone earplugs, they had an actual iphone in their back pocket. When John and I refused to let him take even the mini ipod, he no longer had a costume. Luckily, John suggested spy with all the cool spy equipment we had given him for his birthday. With a quick change into all black, we were on our way.

Drop off went great. Last week we had a catastrophe. David rushed ahead of me, saw there were other kids in the class before him and freaked out. He was used to being the much lauded first one in the room and couldn't bear the change. Of course, he explained none of this. I just found him down a corridor crying and flipping out. When I finally figured out the problem and explained the change had been my fault--I had purposefully come later--he managed to settle in. This week, no worries.

Back home I prepped the poetry unit I'm teaching tomorrow. That's the worker hat. And I sent poems off to the New Yorker. That's the pobiz hat. I did not, however, write any poetry. I have not written any for three weeks. Tuesday. Tuesday is going to be all poetry all day.

I had to throw my Mommy hat back on to make lunches, pick up Rose's friend, and get back to synagogue for the Purim carnival. It went great. We had this lovely balance where I told David he was free to wander around without me, and he asked me to join him. Sack races, tossing bean bags, bouncy house, balloon swords. . .it was all your standard sweet carnival stuff. It was also loud and crowded, but I did not get overwhelmed.

We got home at 2:30 and I admonished everyone that unless they were throwing up, they were not to bother me because I was helping a student over the phone. David has been needing a lot of attention recently, but yesterday we got him a new book on cd and oh my goodness, I worked for two hours uninterrupted. John was home, but he only had to do minimal kid care.

While I was working with student A, student B emailed that if I happened to have time, here was her paper, and it was due tonight.

I ignored student B and played with David for an hour. Yesterday was miserable. He whined or fell down in a heap over everything, so I didn't quite trust that we were going to just have fun, but we did. We played bat the balloon. I added and when it drops, you have to tidy something.

John made dinner. John also made two loaves of bread, went shopping, and lead a review session for his students. After dinner, John read to the kids while I critiqued student B's paper. Then I did the dishes.

John and I didn't get to watch t.v. together. Rose read too much. I didn't get any exercise or write any poetry. But otherwise, a full balanced day.
