rights and responsibilities

We have a tradition in our family where at the end of every school year the kids get a new right and responsibility. I can't actually remember when and what they've been. (I'll ask them and update later.)

This year David is now allowed to cross small streets by himself. Rose is allowed to set her own bedtime. All rights can be revoked if misused.

They have the same new responsibilities: setting and clearing the table for dinner, and not assuming that John and I are at their beck and call. They have gotten into the habit of calling for us from the sofa to tell them the time, bring them a glass of water, give permission to eat another muffin, etc. If I'm in the kitchen, and a child asks nicely, of course, I can bring a glass of water, but the commanding me from two rooms away ends. And if you are shocked we have gotten to the state, so are we, but at least we are stopping it.

The kids seemed thrilled with their new rights and serious about their new responsibilities.
