Rose got honored at school today. It seems that once a month the school lets teachers nominate students for academic achievement and citizenship. We got a notice that Rose had been nominated but had no idea what for.

As Rose pointed out, the ceremony was like her 5th grade commencement. The teacher came up, talked about the student a bit, and gave them a certificate and a pen. All in all there were about twenty kids, so not that many out of 1,000 or so, but they do have it once a month.

Rose's Language Arts and World Cultures teacher (her favorite) nominated her and another boy for being the eye in the hurricane. Ms. Griffiths told us how the class of 6th graders was like a hurricane--full of energy and chaos. Rose stayed calm and helped calm things down. Rose would say things like, "Lets hear from everybody." The teacher said the class would have veered out of control without these two students.

My immediate reaction--how lovely, so glad she brings such good energy to the room, and it's not like she's made an effort to be this type of person; this is just who she is.

Rose's immediate reaction--It's not completely true. Sometimes, I'm at the outer edges. I'm not always and completely and perfectly the person she is making me out to be.

My reaction--Oy. My darling girl, we accept that you aren't perfect. We accept that plenty of other people are equally helpful, but could you please accept this honor this day?

She came around.
