doing the shim sham Christmas eve at O'Hare

Christmas eve we had a two hour layover in O'Hare, and by some bizarre miracle, in the crowded pushing and shoving that is O'Hare, we found a wide open space with just a few empty seats around it right across from our gate. So, John and I decided to dance.

We were standing up facing the kids in their seats. We did the first five beats, and woman sitting near us looked up and said, "That's the shim shim." No way that she recognized it. No way that she was, in fact, a balboa teacher from Germany. No way that she got up danced with us.

We did the shim sham, zydeco, lindy, east coast. I led. She led. John led. Rose even got up and danced swing with us. David showed us his self entitled "happy dance," but it didn't seem to involve putting down the video games.

Brittany, on her way to Pittsburgh, came over to learn how to dance. Jason Koon, who turned out to be a professional poker player, for real, tried out a few moves. Someone gave us chocolate bars because we had made their layover so pleasant. Many many people smiled at us. We kept the music low and made people very happy.
