Last night Rose was planning to be a piece of cheddar cheese for Purim, and David had spent an hour decorating cardboard green for his Creeper (from Minecraft) costume. This morning I woke up to two Ten Men. The Ten Men, in case you haven't been obsessively reading The Mysterious Benedict Society, are the bad guys dressed as businessmen. Rose and David were both in all black with ties on. They had watches and soon added briefcases. John made them business cards, and they packed their briefcases with dangerously sharp pencils. But the best part of the costume were the menacing faces.

In another step forward in gluten free living, the Purim carnival lunch offered gluten-free pizza. I was shocked. I'm not quite sure how I feel about my children now qualifying for overpriced unhealthy food. What am I saying? I know exactly how I feel. Thrilled!

We still had to bring our own hammentashen, but John had us covered. He made a chocolate infused dough and filled the cookies with jam, marshmallow fluff, and this amazing honey nut mixture he made up that tasted like backlava.

The carnival was its usual sensory overload chaos. Everywhere I turned cows, princesses, superheroes, a Tesla, disco balls, and a heavy metal fan (that was the rabbi). The kids amassed great amounts of tokens. David was completely on his own and managed to understand and work the system, so he got very satisfactory prizes—bubbles, one lacrosse stick and ball, giant glasses. Rose was with me and made some bad decisions, like entering all 100 tickets in a raffle. She didn't win. Which means she came home with nothing. She was pretty sad about it.

Rose: I didn't get any prizes at the Purim Carnival.
David: Yes, you did. Mine.

It took me a second to realize he was offering to share all his loot. Sometimes, I really like my kids.

I feel sad I didn't get to go to the Purim shpiel the night before, but between taking David to a birthday party and Rose having an extra dance rehearsal, it wasn't going to happen. Still, I booed Haman in my heart, and that was very satisfying.
