coding camp

Did I mention earlier that because of my mile long bat mitzvah to-do list, I had managed to plans no camps for David this summer? Not good.

I heard about a computer coding camp for kids that some random person from our elementary school recommended. They had a half day version, so if he hated it, it would be over fast, and without David's permission, John and I signed him up. We don't usually do this. We didn't make him do after school activities or organized sports. But I needed some blocks of time. David needed more to do. He likes computers. Scratch that. He loves screen time. So, we took the leap.

At first, David was scared and worried when he heard about it, which translated into pissed. He thought it was going to be like technology class at school, something about an angry bird. Boring. Then he got into a free one day workshop at the Bureau of Fearless Ideas (tutoring center down the street), and fell in love with Scratch. He couldn't believe he got to design his own computer games.

That's what they've been doing all week--designing computer games with Scratch, a visual program developed out of M.I.T. He adores it. He cannot stop talking about his games, the other kids' games, what he wants to design next. I love that this program lets kids be immediately successful. He's made a story about hippos having a birthday party, designed a game where the cat has to catch the doves and avoid the dogs, and added dialogue (not always spelled correctly) and music to his presentations. He's exploring an area Rose has not, and that's cool too.
