Bad Culture

Rob spoke over the phone with the ER vet last Friday night and we found out that the culture of what came out of Cupcake's abscess was not good. It was a super antibiotic resistant strain and the antibiotics he was currently on were doing nothing for him.

There were only a few antibiotics that had a chance against this infection. One would cause horrible diarrhea and he would run the risk of dying from dehydration. Another would cause kidney failure. The last option had never before been used on sugar gliders, but worked very well on dogs and cats against this particular infection. So, he got a shot of that one.

He did get some diarrhea, but once we started him on a yogurt/kaopectate/vitamin mix it started to firm up a bit. He seems active and he's eating, both of which are good signs.

His re-check is tonight and we'll see if it worked or not. If it works, Cupcake is going to be famous - the vet will be writing about him and the antibiotic. If not, he'll need to be hospitalized and put on an antibiotic drip that has a high chance of destroying his kidneys. I can't even think about that right now. He has to be okay.

Very nervous about tonight's appointment. Mom will be staying at our place with Gabriel when we head to the vet.
