Just as I'm thinking that I have a clear plan for working through a variety of big, hairy tasks at work, my husband walks into my office to tell me that Rebecca's school has called and she's been suspended for 3 days for fighting. It turns out that tension with a former friend of hers escalated to a fist fight this morning. Both girls told the same story - the former friend pushed Rebecca, who slugged her in the face, and a return punch was thrown. This has been simmering for some time now, although no one realized it would boil over like this. Because there was physical violence involved the girls were both given automatic suspensions and the police were called. They were also both given a citation for disorderly conduct, which carries up to a $300 fine.

The assistant principal handled the situation very well, telling Rebecca that fighting is a scary situation as are the results. I talked to her about how she's not a bad kid, I still love her completely, but she made a couple of bad decisions. She's grounded for an undetermined period, has no access to TV (except for news, which is like being bitten by fire ants for her), has lost the use of her computer and cannot talk on the phone. She did stock up on books at the library this afternoon, so perhaps some good will come of this. When she goes back to school on Tuesday, she and the other girl will go into a counseling session and try to work things out.

Things I've learned today:
1. Pay attention to *everything* your kids say about school, not just the seemingly big stuff. Rebecca mentioned this girl's harassment a couple of times and I should have called the school about it.
2. If you plead guilty to a citation, you don't have to waste your time going in front of the magistrate and the fine will probably be the same.
3. There is way too much paperwork when you refinance your mortgage (which we finalized this evening). This supports the "never underestimate how stupid people can be" theory, because someone has to have done something incredibly dumb or greedy for all these signatures to be necessary.
4. There is not enough chocolate in the world for this day. But one can always try, can't one?
