This morning, I received the following email:

"A serious breach of security has been discovered in the primary administrative information system at the XYZ (university where I went to school). This system contains 197,000 individual records, and many but not all, contain Social Security numbers. Among those in the system are Business School alumni, students (including students who have taken a few courses or one course at XYZ), admissions applicants, present and former faculty and staff, and corporate recruiters. I write to inform you that your record is contained in the breached XYZ system.

You will be receiving additional communication...."

Gah!!!

This is not the way I like to be greeted in the morning!

Grumble, grumble.

So, after having gone through the process of contacting the credit agencies to have them place a Fraud Alert on my accounts, I'm a *little* calmer than I was an hour ago. A little, I said.

I'm still freaked out.

What?? It bothers me. I suppose it happens to tens of thousands of people every day. But still....it isn't supposed to happen to me! Self-positivity bias, anyone?

Also, in combing through the websites of the different credit agencies, I came across this:

Opt Out Option

Does anyone have any experience with this? Has anyone tried it? I'm curious to know if it works. I'm tempted to try it myself, but am going to wait, because one of the "perks" of being a victim of fraud is that, supposedly, all credit card offers will stop for the next 6 months. *silver linings*

I hate credit card offers for a number of reasons, not limited to 1) they are a complete WASTE of trees and 2) no one needs a credit card offer in the mail. There are a bajillion (true, I counted them) methods of getting a credit card, without having the offers come to you in the mail. We are a nation in debt past our eyeballs and yet we offer credit to every breathing entity within our borders. Seriously, my dog got an offer for a platinum Visa the other day.

I don't even *have* a dog.

Pfffft. Damn marketers.

Because this will bring a smile to my face anytime:

Soundtrack: Tribute to Stevie Ray" 6.5MB ~Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, B.B. King
