Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Layering it on

I grew up with cold weather and have always preferred it to oppressive heat (my actual preference, like everyone else, is neither, but housing costs are too high in San Diego).
There's always been a subconscious wish to come home to Buffalo along with several dozen winter time visits over the years. I have plenty of sweaters, jackets and wool blazers.
I own a rain coat, but haven't had a winter coat for more than 20 years.
I woke up this morning to a forecast of flurries with a high of 38 degrees. The "wear just a wool blazer and unlined rain coat plan" is shot. If I layer for the cold, I will swelter during the interview.
And I always swelter during interviews anyway. It's the adult equivalent of being sent to the principal's office. I recognize the irony of talking to people about abilities in marketing and promotion, when I hate to market myself. Look at my book, give me a written test, give me a practice project and I'll wow them. Make me just sit and talk about myself and I will sputter, stammer, rush and leave out only the most important parts.
I've been practicing the process in my head the entire drive up here.
The first order of business today is to buy a coat. The goal for the rest of the week is to carefully layer my words.
