Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. The mother of...

I should be on my way to Binghamton right now and friends I'd love to see. I haven't opened the windows yet, but can hear cars moving easily on the street outside.
The forecast here is clear and cold, but the Weather Channel and weather.com warn of storm possibilities between here and there and so I sit.
Was I bolder when I lived in Buffalo before or am I smarter now? Does wisdom come with age or just age?
I almost bought the "age is just a number" thing the other night when I went out with a 20-something and a 30-something from the office. They are bright, funny and tall women. We had a ball. Age is simply attitude, I told myself.
But I heard myself telling them about this really great guy who just produced his first music video in Hollywood and another who is getting lots of attention for creating a very visible campaign for Leo Burnett. Both young men are the sons of spectacular women who are my friends.
I sent an email to the dean of the j-school at my alma mater giving the specifics of an intership I will be offering this summer.
He forwarded me to message he sent on to his staff identifying it not as the opportunity to work for a Class of 1981 alumni, or award-winning journalist... nope, the selected student would be working with "Jess Critton's mother."
Renee (Harry the director's mom) is likely the most skilled reporter I've ever met. Marilyn (Greg the Burnett guy's Mom) is a graphic artist without parallel.
There's a sense of accomplishment in seeing your children carry a creative tradition and pride in seeing them reach new heights.
But does it have to happen so quickly? Renee, Mariyln and I have plenty left to do.
I can't help but think that Harry, Greg or Jess would be heading to Binghamton right now.
