Mr. Lippman is working on a family tree and he reminded me of one of my happiest memories -- my maternal grandfather (technically my step-grandfather, but I never knew my mother's biological father) took me to the State Fair. Family legend has it that I walked through the barns and said: "If you've seen one cow, you've seen them all." But what I remember is the unmitigated joy of going to the name-guessing booth with him. The name-guesser asked how many letters who had in his name, the first initial and, perhaps, one more letter. Let's say a vowel. So the name-guesser had "S" and "E," five letters in all.

I can't recall what he tried, but I know I won a little white horse when my grandfather stumped him. His name was Emory Speer Mabry JR. and he went by Speer, as does his son and grandson and great-grandson.

Memories about names or tiny perfect moments, please.
