Off to the northern hinterlands

Is that redudant? Does "hinterlands" somehow already imply some amount of north-ness?

I'm leaving on Monday for the Mendocino Coast with my students, and I will not likely be online until next weekend. Just wanted to let anybody who cares, know. Or maybe anybody know, who cares. Huh. Neither sound good.

I seem to be having trouble using English properly this evening. Must be because it's time for bed.

In positive Katrina news, before I go to bed, my aunt listed her Berkeley apartment as available temporarily for evacuees, and a man who made it out with his wife and very tiny baby got in touch with her. They made it as far as Chicago, and they have nothing, absolutely nothing. Their house is gone. That's the horrible and sad part. The good part is that they made it out, and that he has a job offer in San Francisco, and is going to stay in my aunt's Berkeley apartment for a couple of weeks while he looks for a more permanent place for his family. I'm very proud of her for offering her place, especially because she is very protective of her space, generally. She won't be there, obviously, while he's staying there, but it's still significant. And I'm also just mostly glad that somebody in my family is doing something that will truly help an evacuated family in a very practical way. I don't have any extra rooms or even much couch space (my living room is still all full of boxes). I wish I had more to offer.

I'm trying to figure out how to involve my students, and even just how to talk to them about it. It's so huge... I suppose I could just ask them what they know, and ask them what they think, and ask them to find out what they could do. Yeah.
