Eric Mayer's comment that he wrote 60,000 words on his blog last year made me take a look at my own blog numbers. I did about 94 entries, starting in April 2005. My first one ran about 500 words, but I'm inclined to think it was shorter than most. My blog entries tend to run a little long.

94 entries doesn't count this call & response thing that I like most about blogging, so I'm actually going to call it 100 entries for simplicities sake and call it 700 words, acknowleding that these are guesses and probably low ones at that, but also because that makes for 70,000 words (I'm not trying to beat Eric, honest), but because 70,000 words is about the minimum length, give or take, for a commercial novel these days.

The words that popped into my head as I wrote that sentence was: What the hell were you doing?

And, in fact, I find myself not exactly at a loss for words, but stuck with the image of myself, mouth open, hands flailing the air, trying to come up with the right kind of expression for the complexities of a professional writer writing 70,000+ words for free!

Do you realize my best client pays me $1 a word? Jesus Christ, am I insane?
