Sorry about the short entry for yesterday. Our day off wasn't really, so I wasn't in a mood to write much.

Today, after barely getting the car to a petrol station, we returned to Reynistadir in order to draw some of the trench profiles. We got a couple of them done. They take a while, but we hope to get faster with them.

While deepening one trench in order to be sure that we had no more interesting layers in it, I came upon what appears to be a post hole with a wooden post still in it. This feature may, in fact, turn out to be a prehistoric preserved tree, but in either case it shows that we can get well-preserved wood a meter down in the soil.

Today we have four more people arriving:

Anna, a grad student from UCLA.

Tim, a professor from Northwestern in Chicago.

Antonio, a professor from Cal State, Northridge.

Liz, a professor from Cambridge.

Our house won't fit us all, so a group of people will be moved to the other house, where the soil lab is, for a week. After a week, that group will come back to the farm house, and another group will go to the lab house.

Overall the day turned out windy and chilly. Dark is starting to settle some at night, and the average temperature has been declining. In a couple of more weeks it will be good to return to sunny southern California.
