Chilly Dig

A chili dog for a chilly dig would be good right now. The day started cold and overcast, but cleared around noon to be sunny and chilly. The weather certainly keeps one guessing.

I'm still at Holar, finishing up some trenches here. We thought we had reached bottom on one, but then discovered that we had not, so we had to dig it deeper, then go back and amend our profile to show the new layers that we uncovered. Overall we had a straightforward day and not much noteworthy.

Apparently the backhoe did go to Glumbaer so I will most likely go there tomorrow to examine and profile the trenches.

A week from today, Shelley will arrive, and I certainly look forward to that!

Sorry there's not so much to talk about today. Spending the day drawing trenches that we've spent the last several days discussing doesn't give me much to report.

The trench that we worked on most today stretches only 5m, but goes down about 1m. It has a rather large stone near one end that seems to be under a thick whitish/grey clay layer. This stratum contains some bits of H1 tephra, laid down in 1104, but the combination does not seem to work because the tephra lies within what seems to be clay rather than turf.

The clay might have been cut with the tephra in it, but such a thick layer makes no sense here. It might work with a place where people might want to have a pond or something to collect water, but its location does not work for either. Ah well, perhaps the Icelanders will figure it out when the work on the site.
