We've decided that autumn has arrived here in Skagafjord. We got dumped on from 11:30 to 4:00 pm or so. It poured. We worked anyway.

And after the rain ended, we got a double rainbow and sunny skies and a fair breeze and warm temperatures. But at that point our work had ended for the day.

I spent the whole day at Glaumbaer profiling a couple of trenches, a pair which had been marked out by John and Doug yesterday. Given that most of the strata had already been marked, the drawing went relatively quickly.

We had trenches with a deteriorated turf wall, pits dug through, over top of natural in situ tephra layers, above wind-blown deposits of sand, topping midden material with large chunks of charcoal all resting on a natural base of sterile soil. Lots of colors of dirt to draw lines through, then indicate on waterproof "paper" called Mylar.

At Glaumbaer there is a museum, coffee shop, and about six turf houses that show off what life was like living in them, over the past few hundred years. The people who work in the museum and coffee shop have been very friendly and often give us tea or soup when we come up to use their facilities, and tonight they put on a special dinner for us of pit-cooked lamb and side dishes. Delicious!

Shelley should be on her way here now, to arrive at about 9:00am in Saudarkrokur, so I am looking forward to meeting her plane in the morning!
