Smoking machines, novel and holiday photos

(If you want to skip the moaning, ignore this first section and go straight on to the next one...)

Today has been one of those days.

Just before we went on holiday, our washing machine broke. Today they brought the new one around, just as Steph was getting ready to go to work. So, I quickly unplumbed the old machine while the new one was brought in. Of course, that caused a big mess, as the cut-off tap doesn't properly work. Had to find the stop cock and shut off the water for the whole house. (Off course, this valve was behind all of our piles of old cardboard boxes that we keep for no real reason.) Drove Steph to work, got back, plumbed in the new washing machine. Went off to buy some screwdrivers and do the weekly shopping (I hate the new Sainsburys--I can't find anything in it). Then I came back, scrubbed out the refridgerator. Finally, after borrowing a spirit level to make sure the washing machine was level, I started it off. Two minutes later, I can smell an electrical fire and smoke is coming out of the top of the washing machine. Hooray. Tomorrow, I get to wait around for an engineer, and we still have no clean clothes.

That's the end of the moaning. You've been a wonderful audience. Thank you.

I heard back from my agent during the holiday about my novel, The Sleepers. Nor surprisingly, she wants lots of changes. Particularly she didn't like most of the characters. I knew there would be big changes, because that's how she operates, but I find the idea of changing the characters pretty daunting. I just have to remind myself that I found the changes to the last novel really daunting too, but I managed them.

So, we had a great time on holiday. The weather was beautiful, very sunny and warm most days. We spent the week walking along Hadrian's wall and exploring old Roman forts. Steph, unfortunately, had some nasty virus, so she couldn't do as much as she wanted, but it was still a nice, relaxing time.

Just because you didn't request them, here are some photographs:

More photos, and less moaning, in the next entry.
