An American in Paris

An elderly American gentleman arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he fumbled for his passport.

"You 'ave been to France before, monsieur? “the customs officer asked sarcastically. The old man admitted that he had been to France previously. "Zen, you should know enough to 'ave your passport ready for inspection." The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."

"Impossible. You Americans alwayz 'ave to show your passports on arrival in France ! "

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. "Well, when I came ashore at Normandy on D-Day in '44, I couldn’t find any Frenchmen to show it to."
Im on MTV!!

Some of you may remember my “Weekend of hell”, where one Friday we (the promotions department) got to ride to Wilmington to do a few tags and interviews with the cast of One Tree Hill, at a charity football game they were playing.

Well, This morning, a co-worker comes in here and says “Hey, I saw you on TV last night”..

Of course, at 8:30 in the morning, my response is “Huh?”

He says “Yea. On MTV”

So I'm thinking, ok, is this another Mick Foley crack? (I've been mistaken for the WWE wrestler Mick Foley a few times. Even had someone ask me for an autograph…)

Apparently, MTV has this show called Diary. Where they usually pick someone and follow them around for a day.. Well, this time they picked the cast of One Tree Hill, and they happened to be there the day they were doing the charity football thing, which we were present…

(I wonder if were those weird guys carrying the little handheld video cameras.. He looked like he smelled..)

So anyway.. Catch me if you can, on MTV (of all places), on the One Tree Hill episode of Diary here

My god! Its Rice!

I just don’t get it, the whole “import car scene”. I mean, they buy a little import car, with a little 4 or 6 cylinder motor, then spend $20k on it to make it do something when you could have just bought a good ole American Musclecar. What happened to all the late 60’s early 70’s musclecars with big motors? Hell, even the new 05 mustang GT is going to come STOCK with 300hp.. Not to mention Corvette, the new Pontiac GTO. (although I think Pontiac missed a great chance for some retro styling..)

But I mean, come on.. have you ever seen the ricer import cars at the drag strip? They literally put the big tires on the front of the car. And they put all the decals for various car part manufactures all over their cars..

The racing stripes make them go faster don’t ya know
And the neon lights underneath must help it grip the road..
And don’t forget the wing on the back.. (even though it’s a front wheel drive car)
And lets not forget the bolt on aluminum wings and little coffee-can muffler at the back..

No matter what stickers you put on it, what wing is on the back of it.. ITS STILL A FREAKING HONDA PEOPLE!!

Can I start a grass roots movement to bring back the good ole’ American musclecar?? There have to be some left..
Weekend from Hell

Well, Last week was a fun work week (insert sarcasm here). Thursday, I learned that the promotions department was headed on a road trip Friday. It seems that one of the stars of the WB show One Tree Hill, decided to have a cast charity football game. Sooo.. Kim decided that we should all go down there. Do a couple interviews, and have some of them do “Tags”. A tag is when you see someone on the TV, and they say “Hi, I'm (insert name here) and you are watching Raleigh's WB22”. Well, I'm the unofficial photographer, and equipped with my Canon 10D, I got to go too. So Friday, the promotions department and one news reporter head out for the 2 hour drive to Wilmington NC around 12:30. With a quick lunch stop, we got there around 3ish. (I took the wife's nice new Jeep liberty - a highly comfortable vehicle for someone who is 6'5”)

I tell you what - I'm amazed at how people go so apeshit over TV personalities. I must be the most non-star struck person on the planet.

One day at work, the station was blessed with the presence of Ron Lester. Ron Lester was the big guy on the WB show “Popular”. He was in a weight loss program at Duke, but needed to tape his tryout for the casting for the movie “Dude, where's my car”. So he came to us to help him with the taping. Well, I'm sitting in my office, and my phone rings..

“Art Department”

“Hi, This is Ron Lester from the WB show “Popular”

“Yea?”

Then there was a moment of silence, as if he was confused that I wasn't more excited to see him

Then he said again

“Hi, This is Ron Lester from the WB show “Popular”

And I said

“Yea? So…?”

“Umm.. Do you have any sharpie pens I could borrow?”

“Sure, send someone down to come get them”.

It was hilarious the way this guy had a group of people following him around the station. One girl who worked upstairs, somehow managed to get him to ask her out, and they became a “thing” for a while. (Whenever I see her, I think “Ewww… She had sex with Ron Lester!” )

So anyway, It was quite funny, taking pictures of these people Friday, and not really caring who they were.

Did get a nice shi-shi dinner out of the trip though, but didn't get home Friday night till 11:30.

You can see my highly amateur photos from Friday here..

Saturday:

Well, you'd think that after that, that I would have a nice relaxing Saturday.. Well Noooo! Saturday was the local “America's Next Top Model” casting call. Basically, a whole bunch of girls show up with photos of themselves, and do a 3 minute taped interview that we send to UPN. (Rules are here for those two of you that actually read this blog..)

Now, I've heard people say.. “Yea, sure, tough job. Going to work with all those good looking girls.” Well, all I have to say about that, is after doing this for two seasons of the show already, most of the girls that show up really have no business being there. (Aka, UGLY girls. Don't these people own mirrors???) So I ran one of the cameras for about three hours, then tried to get some decent photos for the rest of the night.

One of the interview questions was “What is your most embarrassing moment?”

The girl said.. “My most embarrassing moment, was when I got piss drunk, and pee'd all over myself in the bed, and the person that was in the bed with me..”

Now., you try keeping a straight face

After we were done, the nightclub opened up, and we all relaxed a bit. Didn't get home till almost 12 that night….

Now, taking pictures, in a dark nightclub, with a real high black ceiling that makes bouncing a flash virtually impossible is a real pain in the ass. But you can see my horrible efforts here..

Well, That's it for tonight. Had a good bit of stuff, so I apologize for my thoughts coming out in a rather unorganized fashion..

One of these days I plan on doing my little rant about “Ricers”, those stupid little cars, and the stupid little people that drive them… But that's another night..

I got my FPrime!
Just to explain to everyone what the big excitement is about (at least for me) Here is a test rendering, with Radiosity using Lightwave's render.

It took almost 1 hour, and 40 minutes.. (See info panel below..)

This, was rendered with the FPrime plugin... in 4, yes, count 'em, 4 minutes. Aka 240 seconds...

And.. It looks better.

After many a months of putting it off, I finally broke down and installed Linux on my server. Needless to say, I've not much experience using Linux, or UNIX for that matter. I do however, vaguely remember telneting to other systems before the days of the internet boom. Hell, I remember when graphical web browser was new, and there didn't seem to be much of interest out there..

The install went ok, or so I thought. I did the things I thought I should do, but yet, the server didn’t seem to be working. Next was a phone call to Matt (Thanks Matt!) and after a couple hours of screwing around with strange config files and whatnot..

I now, re-introduce to you..

www.spyrison.com

Obviously, I haven’t started on the actual website yet. One thing at a time people
