Another meme (this time saw it over at Judy's blog.)

1. Grammatical pet peeve

"Try AND do something."

To try something means that there is a chance of failure. Therefore, the phrase should be "Try TO do something." Using the AND completely negates the entire meaning of the word "try."

Your/You're misuse is right up there, though -- especially because I see WAY too much of it for someone who works at what is supposedly a school.

2. Household pet peeve

Leaving crumpled candy wrappers and other "little" trash here and there, rather than putting them in trash cans.

3. Arts & Entertainment pet peeve (movie theaters, restaurants, concerts)

Movie trailers that give away the ENTIRE plot of a movie.

4. Liturgical pet peeve

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

By whose definition is "other"? Who are we (i.e. those who supposedly wrote down His/Her/Its "words") to limit God or whatever else might be out there/in here?

5. Wild card--pet peeve that doesn't fit any of the above categories

Cutting down tall, beautiful, mature trees because "they block the view" or are otherwise inconvenient.

Bonus: What do YOU do that others might consider a pet peeve?

Be absolutely convinced that something I've intuited is Right and dismissing other opinions, regardless of what information other people may have that I don't. (I'd like to think I'm getting better at curbing this.)
