I have a confession to make.

A few years back, some friends and I -- all die-hard Democrats -- were sitting around, talking politics, and we realized that, if John McCain ever ran for President, we might actually consider voting for the Republican ticket. We were impressed by his intelligence, his personal integrity, and the way that he seemed willing to buck the party line if it were the right thing to do.

I am so disappointed by how he has chosen to run his campaign. Sure, Obama has run some negative ads, and he's succumbed to misleading hyperbole a couple of times, but the sheer scope of McCain's mud-throwing has put him in a completely different league.

And then there's Palin.

I understand the appeal of an attractive, charismatic, conservative female on the Republican ticket: it bolsters both McCain's conservative base and his "maverick" status that could be construed as positioning him as a plausible agent of change.

However.

Let's set aside her complete ignorance of foreign affairs. Let's set aside the fact that being governor of a state which is wallowing in so much oil wealth that every full-time citizen (without a felony record) has received a cash dividend (between $331.29 and $3,269) every single year since 1982 means that she's never had to deal with a budget -- let alone economic -- crisis.

What on Earth was John McCain thinking to select a running mate who was under investigation for ethics violations?? A person who, when found guilty of abuse of power, both lied about the results and tried to categorize the investigation itself as a partisan attack promoted by the Obama campaign -- even though the investigation itself started months before Palin was picked as VP.

Dang. I can't find the initial article that set me off -- one in which Palin was quoted at having issued a statement that she considered herself justified in her actions because she was trying to protect her sister from a dangerous ex-husband.

Excuse me? I don't think so. There's this little thing called "the law" which is supposed to protect people, and if you're in a position of power and you believe that the law can't even protect your own family, then you had damn well better lobby for stronger and more specific laws so that others in similar circumstances can also be protected. Otherwise, you've just shown that all you care about is looking out for your own.

Oh, John. How could you?
