Hunter, at bedtime, after talking about some little boys who were twins:

"Mama, why is it taking so long?"

"Do you mean, why is it taking so long for you to have a baby brother or a baby sister?"

"Or bof!"

"You want both a baby brother and a baby sister?"

"Yes."

I decide not to address this particular aspect because, on some level, I actually would love to nurture lots of kids, but it's simply not economically -- nor energy level! -- possible at this point.

"Because I can't make babies any more, so we need to wait until we can find someone to make a baby for us."

"Why?"

"Well, after you were born, there were some problems, and the doctors had to take out the part of me where a baby would grow in order to keep me safe and healthy."

He's quiet a bit, apparently contemplating this. I try to think of another way to feed his desire to take care of a little one.

"Sweetie, maybe we could think about what friends we have who have babies so you could visit and practice taking care of them."

"Maybe we could go door to door!"

Pause on my part, trying not to laugh.

"Um, I don't think that would work."

"Why not?"

How to explain?

"Well, we don't know everybody door to door, and I don't think they would want us to play with their babies if we don't know each other."

"So why don't you tell them our names?"

"Hunter, you are very sweet."

"Fank you, Mama. So are you."
