Economic stimulus - rebates!

Does anyone think these work?

If so, explain to me how. I don't see it.

The way it looks to me is, most people either pay down debt or save it. This might be a good thing, hell, it IS a good thing. But it doesn't "stimulate the economy."

Some go out and buy something. Maybe they splurge. They use the extra money to buy a car. Or they use it to get that big screen television they've had their eye on. If this is their choice, where does the money go? Well, probably not to an American company. So in this case it may help stimulate Japan's economy, which might, in the long run, be a good thing, too. But it isn't "stimulating" our economy.

It's one of those things I wish Obama would not have brought into his campaign. I respect him for telling the truth, but stuff like this just seems like the usual politics, "buying" votes. Bush's tax rebate checks didn't work, and neither will Obama's. Not if the goal is to "stimulate the economy". That's my view...
