Writing about what you know...

I was thinking about this as I was writing a short entry on my (New!!) Disney blog...one should write about something they can comment on intelligently.

I don't have any special knowledge about the Disney company, but I have read three bios of Walt, one of Roy, and some books on what the Imagineers do (I love looking at their concept art), in addition to some books about the company itself. I love the theme parks, and I love Disney animated movies, going back to the classics like Snow White and Jungle Book.

Even so, while I pictured my Disney blog entries to spring from my "feelings" about all things Disney, it really hasn't...I've been writing about Tomorrowland, about Walt's preoccupation with the past and the future, and about which direction that future might take (and how Disney might play a role in that future as sort of a sideline). It's been about a few ideas and some superficial analysis.

Still, I'm having fun with it. As much fun as I have journaling here, I would say...

So what DO I know?

Well, I know teeth. Dentistry is my profession, and I've been doing it for 22+ years now. I oughtta know SOMETHING about it by now, you'd think.

I know something about business, too. I've been running one for the better part of those 22 years, and have had to deal with business stuff that I'd really rather not deal with - namely, insurance issues and collection issues.

I know something about music. I'm a good, not great, musician. I play keyboards, guitar and drums all a little better than passably, and I'm a good enough singer to get by in a band with at least one other singer to help carry the load. I am not going to be playing the Garden any time soon, but I'm plenty good enough for the bars in my community (even if I don't really DO that much any more).

I know something about books. I love to read. I knock off close to 100 books a year. I used to do well over 100 pre-marriage and kids. I read mostly mysteries, with a fair amount of SF and horror thrown in, and also with the occasional odd thing that catches my interest.

I know enough about a lot of other topics to ask decent questions, and to form opinions. I probably DON'T know enough about many of them to make journal entries about them, but it doesn't always stop me.

I know baseball. Not like some of the history buffs, or the sabermetric stat-heads, but enough to understand in-game strategy, to know what a guy's weaknesses and strengths are, and to have an opinion (sometimes a strong opinion) about what moves a team needs to make.

I know something about chemistry - I majored in it at Loyola University, even if it was a long time ago (graduated in 1982).

And I know quite a lot about Disney. Not as much as some bloggers out there, but a lot more than the average person. You wanna know where to stay? Something about restaurants? Which rides are at which parks? Other attractions? I'm your guy. You want to know the history behind the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World? I'm probably NOT your guy...but I know a blogger who is.

Best of all, I know about me and my family.

So I'll try to continue journaling on stuff I know about, and hoping some find it interesting...
