The Top 100 (or so) Rock Songs
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

Read/Post Comments (6)

I was reading Mark Terry's blog where he is trying to compile his top 100 rock songs, and then I visited his Facebook page, and perused the suggestions. Made a few of my own while I was at it. I thought that it was missing some stuff. And including some stuff that I wouldn't put up for consideration on such a list. So I thought I'd try to do my own. I guess, in this post, I'm just going to try to come up with as many as I can. If you have any suggestions for additions, please post them in the comments section.

I'm going to start with one of Eric Mayer's suggestions: the Kinks.

  • You Really Got Me

  • All Day and All of the Night

  • Lola

I think any discussion of great rock songs HAS to include this band and these songs. Especially the first, You Really Got Me. It was a precursor to the punk movement, only about 20 years early.

And of course, you have to have the Beatles in the discussion of great rock songs. At least *I* do...

  • Help

  • A Hard Day's Night

  • Day Tripper

  • Come Together

  • Glass Onion

  • And Your Bird Can Sing

  • Get Back

  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps

  • Hey Jude

  • Magical Mystery Tour

  • Back In The USSR

I know there are a ton of others and I'm sure I'll add more to the list, but this is a good start.

The Stones:

  • Jumpin' Jack Flash

  • Brown Sugar

  • Honky Tonk Women

  • Sympathy For The Devil

  • Gimme Shelter

  • Satisfaction

  • It's Only Rock and Roll

  • Tumblin' Dice

  • Happy

Again, there have to be more than that. Not all of them might make the top 100 but...

The Who:

  • Pure and Easy

  • I Can't Explain

  • Substitute

  • I Can See For Miles And Miles

  • Love Reign O'er Me

  • 5:15

  • My Generation

  • Baba O'Reilly

  • Won't Get Fooled Again

Some will make the cut, some probably not

Eric mentioned this band too - The Doors:

  • Roadhouse Blues

  • Light My Fire

  • Love Me Two Times

  • Riders on the Storm

I am blanking on Doors songs - I know there are others I really love.

Zeppelin:

  • Black Dog

  • Whole Lotta Love

  • Stairway To Heaven

  • Houses Of The Holy

  • Rock And Roll

  • The Ocean

And some singles (or doubles, as the case may be):

  • Smoke On The Water

  • Rainy Day Women #'s ? and ?

  • Time Of The Season

  • Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting

  • Roundabout

  • Feel A Whole Lot Better

  • Turn Turn Turn

  • All Right Now

  • Can't Get Enough

  • Suffragette City

  • All The Young Dudes

  • All The Way From Memphis

  • Radio Radio

  • Peace Love And Understanding

  • Just What I Needed

  • I'm A Believer

  • Good Vibrations

  • I Get Around (or a half dozen other Beach Boys tunes

  • White Room

  • Layla

  • Pretty Woman

  • Sweet Home Alabama

  • Psycho Killer

I could probably keep going and going. But I need to get some more titles (and bands) and narrow the list and maybe in the next post, I can get a list going.

Any suggestions?
