Just back from five hours shooting panos in York Minster. It takes a long time to shoot in there because the low level of interior lighting forces a longer shutter time, at least double or treble an outside shot. If you don't want people in the final pano, it also means shooting each position multiple times so that the final one can not have them (via post-production editing).

Additionally, because of the high contrast between windows and interior, each station must be shot with apertures appropriate to each pass, for blending later. Therefore... don't expect any panos from the Minster for a while (possibly not until late July). If you subscribe to the journal via the link above, you'll get an e-mail when I post them.

Although I did indeed climb up and down 275 steps with the Panoscan rig and all its gear, and although the view from the top is terrific, the wire mesh cage they have over the whole area really detracts from the resulting panorama. I shot it anyway -- after such a climb, why not? -- and will post at least that one before leaving for Italy I hope.

In order to avoid further disappointment regarding hiring a car, I have reserved one for tomorrow morning. I plan to drive out to Whitby on the east coast and visit the important monastery site there, then come back via a couple other sites. If the weather favors my plans, I'll keep the car another day and head out to the northwest to tour additional historic properties.

Only 275 of these to the top!

View west from the Minster tower roof.

View east from the Minster tower roof.

Sit boy, sit. Nice gargoyle. Stay. Good boy!

Only two of these giant nuts and bolts appeared in the tower, however the undercroft has hundreds of them holding the whole place together.

Amongst the flying buttresses, a view while climbing to the tower top.

The Shambles area, from the tower top.

Uh, here's Purple Pano Dragon again!
