2005-02-08 8:38 PM Food for thought for the next SIX days Mood: annoyed, yet humored Read/Post Comments (2) |
1. Saint Valentine's Day Massacre was one of the bloodiest (7 men were viciously murdered by multiple gunshots) and most unexpected mob hits in history, thanks to Al Capone, in 1929.
2. St. Valentine, according to one legend, died on Valentine's Day in the year 269 AD because, as a Roman, he refused to denounce his Christianity.
3. According to another belief, St. Valentine, a priest, was given the 14th day of February to celebrate his rebellious marriage of couples in Rome, done in secret from Claudius II, which led to him to be beaten to death with clubs and his head cut off in 270 AD.
4. The spending for VDay this year, 2005, is expected to be over $13 billion, an average of $110 per person; last year it was over $12.7 billion, an average of $99.24; and, compare these amounts to what consumers spent in 2003, which was $80.44 per person. 5. The amount of money spent in advertising for Valentine's Day will be no less than $172 billion. 6. The divorce rate in America is over 50 percent, standing at approximately 53 percent. Elegant wedding reception for 300 family members and friends...$32,000. Wedding photographs commemorating the occasion...$3,000. Deluxe two week honeymoon accommodations in Maui...$8,500. The look on each guest's face when they see the 8x10 glossy of the bride screwing the best man...Priceless. There are some things money can't buy; for everything else there's MASTERCARD. So, with these facts in mind, people will continue to rush out to buy that 'special someone' a VDay gift, spending their hard earned cash, while it is also likely that the same couple will not be together by 2006. With VDay having such a violent and bloody history, many people will continue to relish in their delusional thoughts that VDay is the most romantic day of the year. Unfortunately, with all the money spent, gifts bought, and couples that will split up by the year's end, each person is also likely to forget other important things: tell the other s/he loves the other more than just on VDay, forget birthdays, forget anniversaries, and/or will forget some other equally important ocassion. In the tradition of the true VDay, I offer this heartfelt exclamation,"No sooner met but they looked; no sooner looked but they loved; no sooner loved but they sighed; no sooner sighed but they asked one another the reason; no sooner knew the reason but they sought the remedy." Thank you, Shakespeare (infamous line in As You Like It); you summed it up perfectly. Read/Post Comments (2) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
