Hehe...and all I wanted was the license to practice law!?!?
Hey, Rob: Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. : )

The last three days flew by like a couple minutes - now, it is March. Unbelievable. I can no longer ask where the time goes; I have read Terry Pratchett too often to ask such a silly question.

Today is my fun filled one for the week. Well, at any rate is was supposed to be. Instead, I have to hire someone to install a drain in my patio to eliminate the standing water which has built up and flooded it following our recent rain storms. After that, I get to buy two new screens for windows to protect the inside from outside insects. Beh. The mosquitos have come out in flux early this year. West Nile is all over the news this morning since those mosquitos have tested positive for the disease. Lovely, isn't it? With my immune system issues, I am high risk, so better to fix the problems than to play the odds. I am still going to pay a visit to my "Hair God" today to get my color touched up. Now that I have gone back to blond (my natural color,) I am adding a bit of color to the blond so I am not so washed out. My natural color is a very ashy blond, so I add some golden and some auburn to give it some life and tone. After that, off to Lowe's...

I have other stuff on my mind, but choose to post privately about it. After the debaucle before, when it deals with close friends, I am going to play it safe.

Rob got to do something he hears about from me alot yesterday - fingerprinting. He thought it was fun. They really only received a brief overview and the chance to try to lift latent and patent prints, but no information on loops, swirls, arches, etc. So, they now can lift from smooth hard surfaces, but have no idea how to lift from other surfaces or explain the key factors of those prints. LA citizens' money working for them. The LAPD crime lab has four, yes folks, FOUR full time techs, that's it. For all of LA, they have four people to do it all. You would think that is incentive to give the officers at least the basic information of the evidence they collect. *sigh* Guess not. Shoulda thunk.

If the nightmares were not so bad for me, I would go back to doing it. Lord knows there are jobs in the FBI and local departments for my certifications. I had issues dealing with certain scenes. I was tested as hyper-sensitive (emotionally) and told that I should go into a career with less direct contact to the graphic images. Photos do not have the same effect, according to the professionals; in reality that is only true to an extent. The smell in not there, the sounds and the other sensual factors are missing, but still... I have seen some pics that would make the best of any of you sick to your stomach with some good old nightmares to boot. Sick sh** out there.

So, I stick with my own professional game plan. Funny, I was talking to one of my most long-time friends about it and, yes, practicing law still holds some appeal for me. It is just that I always wanted to practice because I thought I would be able to make a difference. Then, I worked for the LA County DA's Office. Too much bureacracy; trying to make a difference is not on their agenda. They want stats. The powers that rule want to show an increase in cases closed (via pleas or otherwise.) The upper eschealon want to report that more cases have been closed in their favor (with some form of time or penalty) than those found against them in court. The courts want to report that they are not as overburdened. It is a vicious cycle. As a family mediator, I have a direct and profound effect on people and on behavior. I like to think that by intervening when I do, I prevent youths from making choices which would enter tham into the system. Likewise, I hope I help parents stop from their patterns which *can* push their youths into rebellious and/or deviant behavior. In the schools, youths are given an alternate forum to those of the fistfight, ditching, or other violative conduct. See? I win. I actually get to do what I wanted to do all along; I make a difference. I never have to set foot in court again should I choose not to... The news this morning is NOT making law more desirable for me. In Chicago, a judge came home to find her husband and mother murdered. Great. Jen, please stay here. No Chicago for you. Nooooooooooooo!

Scott has been in DC going on the second week. After having lived there myself, I told him what to predict for weather. According to him, I lied. DC is having unpredictable patterns just as we are here in LA. Snow. Lots of it. And it is sticking. Poor guy. He likes cold weather as much as I do, but geez. He says his nose is frozen solid by the time he has made it to the Dupont station. I explained he needs to pull his scarf up around his face while walking, but even that only works so much. It is just cold. Cold. Cold. Cold. I have arranged for some cool tours for him via my congressional contacts. He is pretty stoked about the FBI and the Pentagon ones. He is happy about the White House one, but would prefer any other President to be living there than GWB. Oh well. The VIP tour is too good to pass up, though. As for the tour of Congress, I am hoping to have him meet a couple Members before or after his tour - perhaps to have lunch. Yeah, one is my former boss and is Republican, but the other is a Dem and would be an excellent contact for him.

I have turned down an interview in DC myself. Life presents many changes in periods of time. With all I have going on here, my new business, and my new place, it is not very efficient to pick up and leave town. Hehehe - besides, I do not miss the summer weather in DC. Ugh.

If I am going to make it to the SCV on time, I should get a move on it. Need to eat some breakfast, jump in the shower, get some stuff together (including a piece of lasagna for Martin (my "Hair God"),) and get on the road. At least I am going against traffic. Small blessings...
