There are very few true "lead-off" hitters anymore. I never really thought about this until I was glancing at the newspaper on Tuesday. Check out these "lead-off" hitters...

Rangers...Andrus.... .269
Angels...Kendrick... .276
Rays...Jaso... .268
Yankees...Jeter... .264
Orioles...Roberts.. .284
Red Sox...Scutoro... .272
Royals...Blanco... .252

Do I need to go on? Where are the Ricky Hendersons? Where are the Vince Colemans? Where are the guys that hit .300 and steal 50 bases? I wasn't even looking for the worst lead-off guys...that was taking in order of the box scores listed. The Tampa Bay Rays have a catcher leading off? Humm...too bad that Upton can't get on base. He would make a great lead off hitter. I realize the Red Sox are missing Ellsbury... but they can do better than Scutoro...can't they? The all mighty Yankees should have Gardner hitting first- followed by Jeter...or go out and by someone like Ichiro...to hit first. The lead off hitter in baseball is like the center in basketball...it does not exist anymore...am I right or wrong?
