To Spend The Green In Ireland

For my friends who have not heard, K and I will be taking our first vacation (defined as "far enough away to take an airplane"), in eighteen years. As it happens, I will be working in Nottingham/Hucknall again in mid-January to early February, and can take time off before using my ticket home, and we're hoping to use airline miles for K's ticket to the UK, but whatever it takes, we're off to Ireland!

How is this for committing to dates: we bought tickets online for February 7th in Belfast, for a performance by Van Morrison, K's all-time favorite musician, in his own hometown! Lovely.

We have a bunch of books, Rick Steves' Travel in Ireland DVD, and internet researches keeping us busy nailing down a specific itinerary. But the hope is to drive through the countryside, base in bed and breakfast inns for given areas, check out hostels and trains and lots of walking.

I'm determined to get a better digital camera before I go and we'll probably rent cell phones and GPS. We know we want to travel light, but it's the rainy season, so we're resigned to a bit more luggage and clothing than we would in spring or summer. Yes, we won't forget the umbrella.

If anyone has suggestions on any "don't miss" attractions or sites to visit, let me know! We're including the obvious, you know, go kiss the Blarney Stone, a castle or two... We may go bobbing in Cork. We'll try our hand at Limerick. We'll see how far it is to Tipperary, and might have curry in Kerry. We hope not to find any Troubles.
There once was a couple from the hicks...
      They wandered, allowed.
      And pondered, aloud!
To see sites, most reserved to the Limericks!

         --Dobe Doinat!
I'll try to do better than that one, but I want to hear yours! Come on, make up a limerick for me! Or share your favorite one? Please?

I'll post our itinerary when it's more fleshed out. Other than one night in Belfast, we are open, and have 10-13 days off. What a country! This is almost like I'm retired already! (Um, wait a minute! I AM already retired! How easily I forget at my advanced age!)
